Reasons Your Pipes Could Burst or Leak
Many older homes have pipes made of copper, cast iron, brass, and galvanized steel that have a lifespan of 80 to 100 years. On the other hand, PVC piping can last up to 45 years without issue. While some piping products last longer than others, all materials are prone to minor or major damage and deterioration.
Some reasons you may have a burst or leaking pipe include:
- Age – Even though some pipes have an operating life of up to a century, age can play a significant part in plumbing and pipe issues. You’ll always want to have a professional assess your pipes to ensure they’re still intact and there are no potential problems.
- High water pressure – For more homes, the optimal water pressure is between 40 and 45 PSI. If you have water pressure upwards of 50 to 60 PSI, this could do major damage to your pipes. If you’re concerned about your water pressure, Maxwell Plumb Mechanical can check readings to make sure you’re in the clear and aren’t at risk of burst or leaky pipes.
- Corrosion – Over time, most steel pipes will experience corrosion due to a buildup of mineral deposits caused by hard water or many other reasons. When your pipes corrode, they become narrower, putting undue stress and pressure on the lines and resulting in burst pipes. One way to avoid corrosion is to have our team replace your steel pipes with either PVC or copper, which is more resistant to hard water buildup.
- Tree roots – As tree roots grow larger and longer, they seek out water wherever they can find it. Unfortunately, that could mean your plumbing is the best source of nourishment. Tree roots will continue to apply pressure to pipes until they burst. Our residential plumbers are ready to repair or replace your burst underground pipes as soon as possible.
Whether you need pipe repair due to weather damage or you want to replace your pipes with more durable materials, Maxwell Plumb Mechanical is the team that can take care of it.
